Very recently I had the great pleasure of meeting Tomasz Alen Kopera and his wife Anna. During a long walk through the beautiful landscapes of Northern Ireland I was chatting with Anna about Tomasz’s art and also about her own passions, dreams and plans for the future. The result of this nice conversation is this short interview, where you can find out more about the biggest inspiration of Tomasz Alen Kopera – his wife Anna.

Jakub Jozefczyk: During a number of conversations I had with Tomasz he often speaks of how you are the source of his inspiration.

Anna Kopera: Yes, that’s true. Every time it’s different, sometimes I share with him my ideas about new paintings, my emotions, or simply during our casual conversation we both come to a conclusion that a particular idea can be a great subject of his painting. It does happen occasionally, that my own idea is portrayed by Tomasz on canvas. I am really happy that sometimes I am the inspiration for Tomasz’s art, it is a great feeling to be able to contribute to his art in this way.

JJ: Does Tomasz ask for your opinion about his art?

AK: I do express my own opinion about his paintings during the entire process of his creation. If for example in my opinion something is not right about a particular painting, I simply say that to Tomasz. Sometimes he asks me for my opinion while he works, or sometimes I just walk in to his studio and say what I think. I say what I like or what, in my opinion, could be changed. And I’m not talking about the technique but rather about the subject of the painting itself.

JJ: How do feel being the first critic of Tomasz’s artwork?

AK: It varies… Frankly speaking it is a much simpler task when I just like the painting [laughter]. There are paintings that I don’t feel as much as the other, and if that is the case, I say that to Tomasz. But I never insist or impose any changes. I try to understand all the emotions and expression of his creation, appreciate its quality, but sometimes a painting just doesn’t speak to me. I have a saying, which Tomasz knows very well – when I like a painting, I say that this is “my” painting. There are, however, very few paintings that would not be of my taste, and actually its quite the opposite, I love the majority of Tomasz’s art work. I think that Tomasz’s art has some kind of message to tell, and that it evokes real emotions in the viewer.

JJ: How long are you together?

AK: Over 11 years. Its a long time, but it went so quick. That long with him??? [laughter]

JJ: Would you also consider yourself an artist?

AK: I write poems. I create them in “series”, which means that when I am in a creative mood I can write one after another. Later however, there comes a longer break where I don’t write at all.

JJ: Do you publish them, can we see them anywhere?

AK: No, I don’t publish them. I only write for myself, sometimes I just read them to Tomasz.

JJ: What are your passions in life?

AK: I am a big fan of healthy diet. Besides I lead a very active lifestyle (we both run a lot), I also like music and good movies.

JJ: What are your dreams?

AK: My dream is to travel a lot. I love travelling into new places, meeting new cultures and visiting places that are less popular to regular tourists. I was recently overwhelmed by Lisbon, its small, beautiful streets and most importantly its lovely atmosphere and people.

JJ: Any Plans for the future?

AK: We have plans to move back to our home country Poland in the near future.

W ostatnich dniach miałem przyjemność spotkać się z Tomaszem i jego żoną Anną. Podczas spaceru wśród pięknych plenerów Irlandii Północnej rozmawiałem z Anią o twórczości Tomasza oraz jej pasjach, marzeniach i planach na przyszłość. Jakub Józefczyk: W naszych licznych rozmowach Tomasz wiele razy wspominał, że niejednokrotnie jesteś źródłem jego inspiracji. Co Ty na to?

Anna Kopera: Rzeczywiście, tak jest. To przybiera różną postać, czasami dzielę się z nim pomysłami na nowe obrazy, swoimi emocjami, lub zwyczajnie w trakcie zwykłej rozmowy dochodzimy oboje do wniosku, że dany temat byłby doskonały na obraz. Zdarza się więc, że mój własny pomysł Tomek przenosi na płótno. Cieszy mnie więc, że czasem jestem źródłem inspiracji Tomka, sprawia mi wielką radość gdy mogę w ten sposób przyczyniać się do jego twórczości.

JJ: Czy Tomasz pyta Cię o zdanie na temat swoich prac?

AK: Często zdarza się, że w trakcie malowania obrazu wyrażam swoje zdanie. Jeśli, na przykład, moim zdaniem coś jest nie tak, to  mówię o tym Tomkowi. Czasami sam Tomek prosi mnie o opinie w trakcie tworzenia, a czasami po prostu wchodzę do jego studia z ciekawości i wyrażam swoje zdanie. Mówię mu, co mi się podoba lub też co moim zdaniem można zmienić. I nie chodzi mi w tym momencie o technikę, ale o sam obiekt malowania.

JJ: Jak się czujesz w roli pierwszego krytyka dzieł Tomka?

AK: Różnie… Szczerze mówiąc to zadanie jest o wiele łatwiejsze kiedy obraz mi się po prostu podoba [śmiech]. Są obrazy które mniej odczuwam i wtedy dzielę się tym z Tomkiem. Jednocześnie niczego mu nie narzucam. Staram się zrozumieć emocje i wizje jego obrazów, docenić ich jakość, ale czasami po prostu nie do końca sam obraz przemawia do mnie. Mam takie powiedzenie, które Tomek już doskonale zna – kiedy obraz podoba mi się, mówię że jest to taki „mój” obraz.  Jednak mało jest takich, które nie są w moim guście, a wręcz przeciwnie, większość dzieł Tomka doskonale pokrywa się z moimi upodobaniami. Uważam, że Tomka prace zawierają jakiś przekaz i wzbudzają wiele emocji.

JJ: Jak długo jesteście razem?

AK: Ponad 11 lat. To sporo czasu, ale minął bardzo szybko. Tyle czasu z nim??? [śmiech]

JJ: Czy Ty też zajmujesz się sztuką?

AK: Piszę wiersze. Można powiedzieć, że powstają tak zwanymi „seriami”.  To znaczy, że kiedy mam natchnienie potrafię tworzyć jeden za drugim. Później zazwyczaj jest dłuższa przerwa, w trakcie której nie piszę w ogóle.

JJ: Publikujesz je, można je gdzieś zobaczyć?

AK: Nie, nie publikuję. Piszę, jak to się mówi, do szuflady. Czasami tylko czytam je Tomkowi.

JJ: Jakie są Twoje pasje?

AK: Przede wszystkim interesuję się zdrowym żywieniem. Poza tym lubię aktywny wypoczynek  (oboje z Tomkiem często biegamy), muzykę i dobry film.

JJ: Masz jakieś marzenia?

AK: Moim marzeniem jest jak najwięcej podróżować. Uwielbiam jeździć w różne nowe miejsca, poznawać inne kultury, zwiedzać miejsca mniej popularne, rzadziej odwiedzane przez turystów. Ostatnio zachwyciła mnie  Lizbona, jej małe, prześliczne uliczki, jej niesamowita atmosfera i wspaniały klimat.

JJ: Plany na przyszłość?

AK: W najbliższej przyszłości planujemy przeprowadzkę i powrót do naszej rodzinnej Polski.
